NPPE vs PPE: are they the same exam?

Short answer: yes, for essentially every candidate today. Here's the history behind the two names, and the one place a distinction can still matter.

If you're researching this exam, you'll run into both names, sometimes on the same regulator's own website. "NPPE" (National Professional Practice Examination) is the correct, current name for the single national exam almost every candidate writes today. "PPE" (Professional Practice Examination) is an older, informal name that predates the national program.

Where "PPE" comes from

Before the shared national exam existed, some provincial regulators, including Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), administered their own, province-specific practice exam, commonly called the PPE. Publicly available evidence points to PEO transitioning from its own PPE to the shared national NPPE around 2022, aligning Ontario with the same exam APEGA and most other provincial and territorial regulators already used.

What actually matters for you

If you're applying for licensure through any of the participating Canadian regulators today, you write the NPPE, one national exam, the same content and question bank regardless of province. Older web pages, forms, or people in your workplace might still say "PPE" out of habit; for practical purposes, treat the two names as referring to the same exam unless a specific regulator tells you otherwise.

Is NPPE the same as PPE?
For virtually all current candidates, yes. "NPPE" (National Professional Practice Examination) is the exam everyone writes today. "PPE" is an older, informal name still used in some older web copy, forms, and casual conversation, most often referring to the same national exam, or historically, to a province's own predecessor exam.
Why did the name change?
Before adopting the shared national exam, some regulators, including Ontario's PEO, ran their own province-specific practice exam, informally called the PPE. As regulators moved to the single national NPPE (PEO's transition is reported to have happened around 2022), the "N" for National was added to reflect that it is now one shared exam across participating regulators, not a province-specific one.
Does the NPPE test my province's specific laws?
No. The NPPE is a national exam with identical content and questions regardless of which regulator you apply through. It tests generic-Canadian legal and ethical concepts, not your specific province's statute section numbers.
