How much does the NPPE cost?

There is no single NPPE fee. The official program states that examination fees are charged by each participating regulator, so what you pay depends on where you are applying for your licence. Here is what we could verify, and what else to budget for.

The exam fee

You pay the NPPE fee to your regulator when you register, not to the NPPE program or the testing company. Fees change from year to year, and we only publish figures we have checked on the regulator's own website:

For every other regulator, check the fee schedule on its website before you register. Figures quoted in older candidate guides and on forums are often out of date, and a few are several years old. If you are in Ontario, see the PEO NPPE page.

Other costs to budget for

  • A retake. Each attempt is a new registration and a new fee.
  • A missed booking. Booking the wrong time zone and missing your exam means paying a second exam fee to be rebooked, and so can using a work or school computer that fails the security requirements.
  • Testing accommodations. Some regulators charge separately for approved accommodations, communicated after the registration deadline.
  • A second camera. From the June 2026 sitting, you need a smartphone or tablet as a second camera, plus a stand to hold it steady. Most people already own one.
  • Study materials, which are optional. The official reading list names four textbooks; you do not need all four, and many candidates buy none.
  • The official practice test, if you choose to buy it, sold separately by the NPPE program.

Keeping the total down

The biggest avoidable cost is a second attempt, which means a second fee and another two or three months of waiting. Preparing properly the first time is also the cheapest option.
