NPPE Exam Day Checklist

Most of what you read about NPPE exam day is a checklist: set up your desk this way, close these programs, keep your phone over there. Useful, but it does not tell you what the day itself actually feels like. Here is one candidate's account, in their own words, of the parts that went exactly as expected and the one moment that did not.

The night before was quieter than I expected

"I had built up the night before the NPPE into a bigger deal than it turned out to be. I ran the compatibility check on my laptop a few days earlier, so by the night before there was genuinely nothing left to do. I read through my confirmation email once, picked out clothes, and went to bed earlier than usual. The exam itself felt like the hard part; the night before was almost boring, in a good way."

The room scan was the part I thought about most beforehand

"Showing a proctor, a stranger, a full 360-degree view of my home office was the part I kept picturing beforehand. In practice it took maybe ninety seconds. The proctor was businesslike and matter-of-fact, and once the scan was done, it was done. If you are only going to prepare for one thing mentally, prepare for that: it is quick, and then it is behind you for the rest of the sitting."

The stretch that tested me most, and how I got through it

"Around question 40, I hit a run of three questions in a row where I genuinely was not sure of the answer. That stretch is the part of the day I remember most clearly, more than the room scan, more than the countdown clock. What got me through it was the same advice I had read beforehand: flag it, take your best guess, and keep moving. I ended up with about an hour spare at the end to come back to everything I had flagged with a much clearer head."
